Google and AltaVista Test Geographical Searches
Published by Picturesque on Tuesday, September 23, 2003 at 12:41 PM.
Both Google and AltaVista searches are experimenting with geogaphical limited searches. They are depending upon information contained on the site as well as online directories. Users could search for a business, service or product in an area they are visiting or to locate that great place they heard about from a friend.
This makes it even more critical to have your address and other geographical information on your site. Also make certain you are listing in online directories such as yellow page type sites.

Related Links on Google

Although this is nothing new to users of mamma.com, Google is adding a feature they call "related links" on selected user searches. They add some suggested alternative searches that may offer a better alternative to the search you selected. These links will show at the top of the list of results. I have yet to find a search that does this so I'll have to take their word for it. For now if I can't seem to hit on the right combination of words in a search, I just go to mamma.com.
Synonyms Searches on Google

Google lets you search for synonyms in a web search. Enter a tilde before a keyword, and Google will include pages that includes words that have a similar meaning. Google may also include variations of the same word (plural, ing-form etc.)
This search only works on English websites. It will not work in newsgroups, etc. The tilde is the key to the left of the number one on most US keyboards. Use the shift key to access it.
