MSN Ditches LookSmart
Published by Picturesque on Tuesday, January 20, 2004 at 3:11 PM.
It's about time. LookSmart, the scum of the industry, has taken another hit and lost MSN as a customer. MSN has been buying data (lousy data at that) from LookSmart for some time now. Recently this data has been disappearing from MSN sites around the globe and will shortly be gone entirely.
In the future, MSN will deliver results from Inktomi and ads, primarily from Overture. These will be marked as sponsored and featured sites. It is expected that MSN will eventually have it's own search engine and drop all or most data purchases.

New metasearch, Meceoo
Published by Picturesque on at 3:06 PM.
A metasearch is a search tool that allows you to search many sites at once. Meceoo searches data from AltaVista, AllTheWeb and Inktomi. The great feature that Meceoo offers is exclusions. If I want to search for real estate in New England, I can exclude condos and condominiums. Meceoo is French for "But where is it?". Visit them at http://www.meceoo.com/
Special Google Searches

Google has expanded its collection special searches. If you search for the following items, Google will include special links at the top of the search engine results pages.
Enter a US telephone area code in the search field to get a map of the relevant geographic region.
Enter a universal product code (UPC) from an item you purchased in the search field to get more information on the product.
Enter an airline name or code and a flight number and Google will give you links to travel information. (Yahoo! has implemented a similar feature.)
Enter a Vehicle ID number (VIN) to receive more information on the year, make and model of a specific car.
USPS (U.S. Postal Service Tracking Numbers) will lead you to the USPS website which gives you the shipping status of a package.
A feature aimed at giving access to more information about the owners of domain names (e.g. whois seoengine.com) has apparently been removed.

The Open Directory adds Thumbnails to Listings
Published by Picturesque on Sunday, January 11, 2004 at 1:03 PM.
The Open Directory, aka dmoz or ODP, is the largest web directory in the world. Their data is used by multiple search tools and sites. ODP has added a thumbnail view as an alternative to their normal text view. After searching ( http://www.dmoz.com ) click on the red ball in the lower right hand corner of a results page. Thumnails will appear.
Yahoo! to drop Google

Like a hot potato.... Google results have been used in Yahoo! searches but soon no more. What will be the alternative. Someone pass me the crystal ball.
