Published by Picturesque on Monday, September 27, 2004 at 9:03 AM.
Not to be left behind in the "storage" category, Looksmart has aquired the web page storage tool Furl.net. MSN has been storing favorites for users for years; AskJeeves has just added this feature; and now LookSmart is trying a one-up by offering more than just storage of favorites. Furl.net offers 5 gig of storage of web pages. No longer do you have to worry about a web page disappearing and the text lost to you. This generous archival can be shared with other users and even published as an RSS feed. The service works with a number of browsers and on Windows or Mac computers. Google Ranking Hijacking
Published by Picturesque on Tuesday, September 14, 2004 at 1:46 PM.
There are reports of people using meta refresh tags in an effort to steal page rankings. What some underhanded webmasters are doing is creating a webpage that automatically forwards to another site. Google sees a website replacement and changes their listings accordingly. This technique is something that Google should be able to spot but apparently cannot or will not. Google hasn't issued any statement regarding their ability to catch such theft. Should you detect such a technique being used against you, the Google page to report abuse is http://www.google.com/contact/spamreport.html. We haven't seen any action as a result of using this page, but if the reports from this page actually do go to a real human and enough complaints come in, who knows.

Web Search Tools
Published by Picturesque on Tuesday, September 07, 2004 at 12:32 PM.
There seems to be an abundance of new search tools being released. The tools are downloadable programs that search not only the sponsoring search engine, but also find files on your hard drive and/or network that match the search criteria. The race to be the primary desktop tool is definately heated. Which tool should you use? Where they are all newcomers and babes out of the woods, who knows. Todays features could be on tomorrows scrap pile as each tweaks to find it's niche of survival. The winner could help define this new tool that really isn't so new. Such desktop tools have been in use since searching the internet was a common function. The difference is now they are free in an attempt to rule the Internet and the Desktop.
