Yahoo! Contextual Ads and Random Numbers

Yahoo! has announced that they will be serving up a random number of ads displayed in searches. An excellent idea that seems oddly familiar. Seems that Google has the same feature. By serving up a random number of ads, it is thought that people will pay more attention to the ads. People have learned to ignore a set sized space on the page and by altering that size, hopefully more people will view them. Strange behavior as often times clicking on the contextual ads helps me find exactly what I'm looking for....after all, the ad is based on what I'm searching for.

Google and Yahoo came on top in customer satisfaction against 200 search engines, portals, and news and information sites, as measured by the University of Michigan's American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI). Yahoo! came in just two points below Google, the closest Yahoo! has come yet to being number one in this survey. Other contenders: MSN: 75; AOL: 71; Ask Jeeves: 72.

Ask Jeeves has opened up their sponsored listings program for everyone. This replaces the Premier Listings program they had. Although they have a much smaller market share than Google, they do provide a great alternative for online paid advertising.

Rumors abound that Google may be considering free wireless Internet access nationwide. While they could probably afford it, does it make sense? It's possible. Given their hunger for buying up related technologies and services and the fact that more people online means more ad clicks for them, who knows. Look what Microsoft did by giving away a free browser.

Yahoo! has indexed 20 billion pages compared to Google's meager 11.3 billion. Not that it means much if the pages aren't available in a search, but they've been indexed. Search Marketing (still a dumb name), Google Adwords, Miva and a bunch of little guys. Will they be a big gun or a little guy?
