100 Search Engines in 100 Days
Published by Picturesque on Wednesday, September 21, 2005 at 7:35 AM.
While not a physical task like traveling around the world in 80 days, this is a writer's challenge. Authoring one article a day about various search engines and actually publishing something worth reading. While I don't agree with everything published on this site, do read with a grain of common sense and enjoy. Turn on the popup blocker first as this site really turns on excessive ads. Google Secure Access and New Wifi Services
Published by Picturesque on at 7:33 AM.
Google is offering a test pilot for their new free WIFI access. Located near their headquarters in a gym and a pizza shop (good combo there), users can test the new internet access service and even download a secure WIFI connection software program. Check out the policy statement here ... Google Secure Access: Frequently Asked Questions. Although the Google WIFI pages tend to disappear and reappear, this does seem to be the first stage in their attempt to take over the Internet. By providing Internet access and a free security program, imagine the data Google will be collecting and using. Imagine all the new ways they can serve up ads. The mind reals, but is it any different than the information your current ISP collects about you? If I'm giving up the info anyway, might as well get free Internet access out of it.

Apostrophes and Google Don’t Mix
Published by Picturesque on at 2:52 PM.
Apparently Google doesn't like the fancy apostrophe. Many web site creation programs and online editing tools will have this problem as they take a standard apostrophe and convert it to the fancy curved apostrophe. This curved apostrophe is ignored by Google and as a result will not appear in search results that contain an apostrophe. An example is at vaes9: Apostrophes and Google Don’t Mix.
NOTE: I've tested this on sites using TYPO3 and there is not a problem with this site editing tool. Just for my customers who may be concerned.

Yahoo! Next
Published by Picturesque on Saturday, September 17, 2005 at 8:39 AM.
Yahoo! has released the Beta version of their quick search feature. Why a quick search? Yahoo!'s believes if search engines are so smart, why do they return hundreds of answers for a simple search? Their example....if I want the weather for Boston, do I really need ten results? Nope. I probably just want the weather. Try it at Yahoo! Next. Although a bit slow at the moment, it has promise for basic searches that should only have one answer.
